JAMALI NYC GALLERY PRESENTS âPANIC/BLISS (1990Ââ2005)â
ak/gs set 5-24 #701135
NEW YORK CITY â âPanic/Bliss (1990â2005),â is an exhibition that explores the contrast and connection between the physical and emotional extremes. Jamali NYC Gallery, LLC highlights six of Jamaliâs large-scale oil paintings created from 1990 to 2005. The works in âPanic/Blissâ juxtapose the ultimate ends of the physical and emotional spectrum, and will be on view from June 7 to September 3.
Each painting was created outdoors over an extended period of time. Jamali applied custom-made oil, paints, organic and inorganic pigments by dancing on the surface of each piece.
Natural elements such as sticks and leaves, and synthetic materials such as surgical gloves and glass crushed under Jamaliâs feet add to the complexity of each work. The panels weigh more than 200 pounds each â comprising the heaviest series of paintings in Jamaliâs collection.
By exposing the materials to the elements and by applying them with bold, aggressive gestures, Jamali has physically pushed the materials to the extreme. The subject matter is a dichotomy of light and dark, fear and delight. In the figurative pieces, it is unclear whether the subjects are splayed out in torture or dancing. The surfaces are foreboding and dangerous, yet intriguing and mysterious, therefore melding the two themes together â the transition from panic to bliss.
Jamali NYC Gallery, LLC is at 413 West Broadway. For more information, 212-966-3335 or info@Jamali.com.
