Bank Robbery Suspect Misses Court Date

One of the men charged in connection with the March 13 robbery of Fleet Bank on Queen Street reportedly failed to show up for a scheduled appearance in Danbury Superior Court March 31.

William Caputo, 44, of Hartford, who was free on bond, had been scheduled to appear in court on charges of third-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit third-degree robbery.

A judge ordered that a re-arrest warrant be issued for Caputo for failure to appear in court.

Caputo allegedly drove the bank robber and another man to Fleet Bank, where the bank robber stole almost $10,000 from the bank. Police have charged Eric Duffey, 28, of Norwalk with the robbery. They are seeking the third man in connection with the crime.

Concerning the court issuance of a re-arrest warrant on Caputo, detective Sergeant Henry Stormer said April 6, “We haven’t seen the re-arrest warrant yet, but we believe we have knowledge of his [Caputo’s] whereabouts.”

“We’re just waiting for the re-arrest warrant,” Sgt Stormer said.

The three men allegedly were involved in the bank robbery about 20 minutes after they were released from the Cornerstone of Eagle Hill, a drug treatment center on Albert’s Hill Road in Sandy Hook.

The bank robbery is the first reported theft from a local bank since a 1905 bank burglary.
