Former St Rose Priest Arrested

In Internet Sting

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — A Connecticut priest working at a Catholic high school was removed from his job Saturday and ordered to undergo psychiatric treatment after his arrest in a law enforcement sting targeting pederasts.

The Diocese of Bridgeport, in a two-page statement on the case of the Rev John Castaldo, said the priest was relieved of his position as chaplain of Trinity Catholic High School in Stamford. He was also suspended from his duties as a priest. Father Castaldo was a parochial vicar at St Rose of Lima in Newtown from July 1998 to August 1999, when he was transferred to Trinity.

Diocesan officials were in contact with Castaldo and the Westchester County district attorney’s office, which brought the charges against him, the statement said.

“We invite your prayers for all involved in this very painful and difficult situation,” the statement concluded.

The 42-year-old priest was caught in an ongoing Internet sex sting, which has resulted in 42 arrests and 35 convictions. Authorities said he was engaging in sexually explicit online conversations with someone he believed was a 14-year-old boy.

During the online conversations in April and May, Castaldo allegedly said he was a gym teacher, gave out his phone number and described the explicit sexual activity he wanted to engage in to an undercover agent posing as a teen, authorities said.

He was charged with trying to send indecent material to a minor, which is punishable by up to four years in prison. Castaldo was arrested and arraigned Thursday and released without bail.

The archdiocese said it had also arranged for the availability of guidance counselors over the Memorial Day weekend for any students wanting to discuss the case.
