Kids Day At Reed School, October 25

Saturday, October 25, has been proclaimed Kids Day America/International in Newtown. This is the fourteenth year that Kids Day America/International, a health, safety, and environmental awareness day, has taken place around the world.

Drs Rod and Mayumi Deraney, Dr Vicky Crouse, and Dr James Reiley will host the event locally from 12 to 4 pm at Reed Intermediate School, 3 Trades Lane.

The event is free to the community and will provide essential information on crime prevention, child safety, health promotion, disease prevention, and environmental awareness. Children will have the opportunity to be fingerprinted by members of Newtown Police Department. It will be presented rain or shine.

Free Amber Alert IDs and dental toothprints will also be available. Drs Rod and Mayumi Deraney will be providing free spinal health screenings. There will be appearances by BB the Bluefish (1 to 2 pm), Westy from the Danbury Westerners (noon to 2 pm), and McGruff the Crime Dog (all day).

Children can have fun exploring a smoke trailer, fire truck, and squad car. There will also be story time, music, arts and crafts, demonstrations, and face painting for the children.

Many area businesses have generously donated food for the day, as well as prizes that will be given away every 15 minutes. Grand prize of the free raffle will be a child’s bicycle courtesy of World of Bikes.

The community is invited to attend opening ceremonies at noon, where First Selectman Joe Borst will be on hand to read a proclamation and honor the event’s Children’s Empowerment Award Recipients: Police Chief Michael Kehoe, Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue Chief Bill Halstead, School Superintendent Janet Robinson, Sandy Hook School Principal Donna Pagé, and librarian Marie Walker.

The day will benefit Families Network of Western Connecticut, Inc and its mission to prevent child abuse. Attendees are asked to bring a bag of clean, gently used clothing to donate to victims being assisted by the charity.

Volunteers are still needed, and can find out more by calling 426-6334. Additional information about the event is also available at that phone number or online at ChildrensWellness.com.
