The following items will be accepted: oil based paints; stains and varnishes; paint thinners and strippers; wood preservatives; resins, rosins and adhesives; furniture, floor and metal polishes; rug and upholstery cleaners; oven, toilet bowl and drain cleaners; swimming pool chemicals; fluorescent bulbs; pesticides, herbicides, insecticides (including lawn care products); flea powder; mothballs; spot removers; dry cleaning solvents; lighter fluids; septic tank degreasers; engine degreasers; waste fuels (kerosene, gasoline); carburetor cleaners, brake fluids, transmission fluids, and car waxes; full or partially full aerosol cans; rubber cement, airplane glue, photo chemicals, chemistry sets, and hobby supplies, rechargeable (Ni-Cd) batteries including camera batteries; thermostats, and thermometers.

The following items will not be collected: latex paints (residents should allow paints to dry, then put in garbage); empty aerosol cans (put in garbage), household batteries (put in garbage), PCB capacitors, smoke detectors, auto batteries and tires, motor oil and antifreeze (recycle at town dropoff center); ammunition, fireworks, or explosives (call the police department); radioactive materials, unknown gases, controlled substances, pathological material, pharmaceutical or medical wastes; electronics, computers, and VCRs.

Need more information? Call HRRA at 775-6256 extension 304 or visit www.HRRA.org. The next HRRA Hazardous Waste Collection Day open to Newtown residents will not be until September 29, and that one will be in Danbury.
