Foursomes Signing Up For

Eighth Annual NSA Scramble

Sign-up forms have been mailed out for the eighth annual Jack Friel Memorial Scramble, and teams are quickly signing up for what has become a Newtown tradition.

Once again, Newtown Savings Bank has accepted the lead sponsorship for the June 12 tournament, which is the main fundraiser for the Newtown Scholarship Association. J.P. McGuire Associates will sponsor prizes for the tournament, and the Settle Insurance Agency will be sponsoring golf carts. Typically, the golf tournament raises approximately $15,000, money which is put directly into the scholarship fund to provide annual scholarships of $120,000 to graduating Newtown students and continuing aid to current students attending college or technical/ vocational schools.

The Scramble will be held at Whitney Farms Country Club in Monroe, rain or shine, with check-in time at 1 pm and tee time at 2 pm. Entry fee will be $135 per person, and all proceeds will benefit the Newtown Scholarship Association. As in past years a player making a hole-in-one on a designated hole can win a new car. The tournament will include refreshments and will be followed by a buffet dinner. Numerous prizes will be awarded to participating teams, as well as an opportunity to win raffle prizes.

The Newtown Scholarship Association has been in existence since 1937 and continues to provide qualified Newtown students with scholarship aid, which enables them in many cases to attend the school of their choice. Because the non-profit organization is made up solely of volunteers, almost 98 percent of the funds raised go directly to deserving students.

With the help of local businesses and individuals, the Newtown Scholarship Association hopes to make this Jack Friel Memorial Tournament the most successful ever. Although foursomes are rapidly signing up, open spots still exist. If interested, call NSA president Mark Fries at 426-8507.
