Trick Or Treating For The Red Cross

To the Editor:

The events of September 11 had a tremendous impact on all of us. The Middle School Youth Advisory Board, a community service group, sponsored by Newtown Youth Services decided they wanted to contribute in some way to assist the families whose lives have been forever changed.

Throughout Newtown, on Halloween, instead of trick or treating, members will be asking residents to contribute to the American Red Cross Library Disaster Relief Fund. This fund has been established to aid those affected by the tragedy. Monies are being distributed immediately to assist with medical bills, lodging, funeral expenses, meals, clothing and other emergency needs. To date, the Red Cross estimates that well over eight million meals and snacks have been fed to some 82,000 Red Cross relief workers and volunteers; 100,000 people have been assisted by mental health professionals.

Middle School Youth Advisory Board members will be readily identifiable. They will all have a letter from the Red Cross, wear Newtown Youth Services’ buttons, and carry specially marked American Red Cross canisters for your contributions. Students will distribute expressly designed Halloween stickers to contributors. Should you wish to make out a check, instead of offering cash, they may be made out to the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross has been overwhelmed by the compassion of so many assisting in their efforts. Thank you so much, in advance, for your kindness and support of these dedicated young people.

Sincerely,

Roseanne G. Loring

Advisor, Middle School Youth Advisory Board

41-A Main Street, Newtown                                       October 24, 2001
