Neighbors Helping Neighbors

To the Editor:

Holiday Baskets were distributed throughout the Newtown community on December 16, 2000, for the annual “Depot Day” sponsored by The Newtown Fund. The “Depot,” at Sandy Hook School, was brimming with activity, both on Friday night when we put the boxes together, set up the tables, and put up the numbered placards, and again on Saturday as the sorting, gift wrapping, checking, loading and delivering was completed.

The Holiday Basket Program is a monumental undertaking that succeeds only because of the preparation and organization of the Newtown board members; the support of the Junior Woman’s Club Tag a Gift; the dedication of Social Services who recommend the families in need; and the generosity of all who adopt families. In addition, through the many monetary donations we were also able to provide gift certificates for groceries, gasoline and food. In addition we have set up a prescription account for those in need.

The Holiday Basket Program is a wonderful example of neighbors helping neighbors. If you have never participated then you have truly missed an uplifting experience.

Again, thank you to all in the community for your assistance. We couldn’t do it without you.

Sincerely,

Cathy Sullivan, President

The Newtown Fund
