Scholarship/Job Board: A Tool For Students And Businesses

By Tanjua Damon

HELP WANTED: The Newtown High School Career Center is looking for businesses and students who want to participate in a community bulletin board that provides opportunities for all involved.

Outside the Career Center at the high school is a bulletin board that provides scholarship, job information, and volunteer opportunities for students to look at when they are looking for experiences to take advantage of, according to director Jane McEvoy. The Center wants the business community to know that the space is available to post job information that may be available to students.

The board is simply an informational tool. The staff of the Career Center will not be responsible for interviews or weeding out students who are not qualified for certain positions, Ms McEvoy said. Businesses can fax a flyer or job ad to the Career Center at 203-426-6573.

The board is also a good place for students to look for internships or types of work they may find interesting and might like to shadow.

“We would like businesses to be aware of the growing popularity of internships,” Ms McEvoy said. “More students would like the opportunity to be involved in the work environment to get the experience.”

The Scholarship/Job Board is a great way for students to see about what careers are available in their local community. It is a great way for businesses to also market their professions to eager students, according to School-to-Work Coordinator Peg Ragaini.

“We have students who are looking for careers,” Ms Ragaini said. “Businesses need to help encourage students to explore their careers. This is an easy way to build the community business/student relationship.”

The Career Center is looking for ways to continue the positive community/business relationship that already exists in Newtown. This board is a way for adults to help students learn about the real world.

“Newtown has always been known as a helping community,” Ms Ragaini said. “This is a positive way to help businesses and for businesses to help students.”

The Scholarship/Job Board is a great way for businesses to extend information about particular fields, providing students with opportunities to figure out what they really want to be. Hands-on experience sometimes can make a difference when a student is making a career choice.

“If you would like to get more young people into your business, this is the way to do it,” Ms McEvoy said. “This gets students who are more committed to learning in any shape or form.”

The board is available to students during school, so if you are a business that wants help or interns or simply wants to offer an opportunity for students to volunteer time, send your “help wanted” information to the Newtown High School Career Center. Information can be faxed to 426-6573 or call 426-1915.
