William E. Lovell

Longtime Newtown Resident

William E. Lovell of Brookfield, a native and former longtime resident of Newtown, died September 21. He was born in Bridgeport on August 23, 1926, son of Louis and Mildred (Stevens) Lovell.

Mr Lovell was a graduate of Newtown High School. After graduating, he entered the Merchant Marine for three years and then joined the US Army for five years. Mr Lovell was a 30-plus-year member of the Newtown Hook & Ladder Company.

Mr Lovell, better known as “Elmer #185,” built and raced his own stock cars under the name L.C.S. (Lovell, Candee and Smith) in the late 40s and 50s.

In addition to his beloved wife Anna (Bigham) Lovell, he is survived by a son, Lawrence of Middletown; a daughter, Linda Garrity of Bridgewater; a grandson, Erik W. Bausch of Warren; a brother, Edward of Florida; and a sister, Helen Knapp of New Hampshire; and several nieces.

Private funeral services and burial in Newtown Village Cemetery will take place at the direction of the family.
