Two Sides Of Newtown
Two Sides Of Newtown
To the Editor:
As I looked through the letters last week, headlines immediately jumped out at me, showing me what is meant by âNicer in Newtown.â Newtown Youth Servicesâ Independent Living Day certainly showcased the idea of caring for your neighbors, while the movie for Zach showed support for those around you. The teamwork of the people supporting the new pound is creating an amazing result as well.
And then there are the letters that anger me. Most importantly, to Mr Licata, you have 14 hours to vote, not 2. The polls are open from 6 in the morning until 8 at night. And if you know you will be out of town for all 14 hours, you can get an absentee ballot from the town hall. If you truly care about your town and the vote, Iâm sure you could find a way to make it happen. And even if they were only open for two hours, it would not be the council or its chairman who decided on these hours. That is not their job. They are in touch with their constituents; their constituents just arenât paying attention to the town they live in.
Mr Mihailoff, you cannot have a conference online. The point of a conference is bringing many people together to share ideas and thoughts, to move forward. It just isnât the same online. In addition, the buses that leave the high school empty are on their way to the middle school to pick up kids. They already combine the runs.
It is Nicer in Newtown, as seen by so many of the efforts displayed in last weekâs letters. And, yet, it isnât. The ignorance and apathy is abundant. Another chance to vote for the budget will be coming soon. It may be at a town meeting, and it may be a referendum. Pay attention! Know when and where! Educate yourself! We have great schools and a great town, but if we continue to vote down the budget it will continue to divide the town and hurt the schools. Step up and support the budget...every vote counts!
Sincerely,
Sarah Hemingway
