CT Sculptors Presenting Juried Exhibition At Lockwood-Mathews

NORWALK — The 19th Century Lockwood-Mathews Mansion is the scene of the 11th annual members’ exhibition of the Society of Connecticut Sculptors (SCS), on view through Tuesday, January 6.

The renowned international sculptor Stanley Bleifeld, who divides his time between studios in Weston and Pietrasanta, Italy, is this year’s juror. A former president of The National Sculpture Society, he has selected more than 70 pieces of original sculpture that have been placed throughout the first floor of the historic mansion, which has been brilliantly decorated for the holiday season.

All work is available for purchase and, in addition, there is a gift table of affordable sculpture priced up to $300.

Organized in 1992 in the Hartford area, the Society of Connecticut Sculptors was originally open only to representational sculptors from across the state. Over the years, the representational stylistic requirements have eased.

Today, SCS membership is also open to sculptors who interpret their subject mater, the figure, interiors, animals, the object, or the landscape, more abstractly. Work cannot be purely abstract, however; sculptors must keep some recognizable imagery that refers to the real world and anchors their piece in physical reality.

More than 100 sculptors currently belong to SCS. Founding member Sally Monahan says member ship is open to any professional, representational sculptor who is interested. Up until recently, the society was open only to people living in Connecticut, but that criteria, too, is changing. More out-of-state sculptors are joining; Ms Molloy points out that quite a few are from Rhode Island, and a sprinkling of others are from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and one from Vermont.

Sculpture exhibit and holiday hours are daily, noon to 5 pm. For information, call 203-838-9799. Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum is at 295 West Avenue in Norwalk.
