NHS Baseball Team Endures Tough To Swallow Defeats

By Andy Hutchison

After trouncing its first three opponents by a combined score of 26-9, and bouncing back from a shutout defeat to Bethel for a hard-earned extra-innings win at Ansonia, it’s been a tough stretch for the Newtown High School baseball team.

The Nighthawks, heading into Wednesday’s scheduled game against Oxford (after The Bee sports section went to press) had lost four games in a row, including three by two runs or less, to fall to 4-5 overall.

The Nighthawks had their hot bats quieted by Brookfield in 2-1 and 2-0 defeats April 18 and 20, respectively, then were out-slugged 12-11 by visiting Notre Dame-Fairfield on April 21. Newtown overcame 3-0 and 6-4 deficits to build a 10-6 lead, but saw Notre Dame-Fairfield rally with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to escape with the victory.

Newtown erased a three-run deficit with a four spot in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Tita, Ryan Powers, Kyle Wilcox, and RJ Roman all drove in runs in the frame. In the third inning, with the Hawks behind 6-4, they struck for six runs, sparked by a two-run Powers double, Evan Noonan, Roman, and Wilcox also drove in runs. After Notre Dame chipped away and pulled to within 10-9, Roman made it an 11-9 NHS lead in the fifth when he knocked in Powers, who had singled and stolen second base.

Each of those three setbacks were winnable games, Newtown Coach Matt Memoli noted.

“It’s the hardest thing to swallow when you have guys who work as hard as our guys do,” Memoli said. “To have these games right in our hands and not be able to finish the job — it’s hard to swallow.”

The Nighthawks, on April 26, fell 14-5 to the same Weston team it had beaten 9-5 early in the season. The Hawks, following the Oxford matchup, visit Joel Barlow in Redding on Friday, April 29, and return home to face Immaculate of Danbury at 3:45 pm on May 2.
