CWU Planning Bible Study

In preparation for its World Community Day celebration in November, the local unit of Church Women United is planning a bible study to be held on Friday, October 31.

In November, women will gather across the country in groups to celebrate World Community Day 2008 based on the theme “God’s Wisdom Sets Us Free.” Many CWU local and state units have long histories of involvement in prison ministry. The November service will call on attendees to look at the struggles in their own lives while reflecting on how they are called to minister to one another.

Taking a look at the “Golden Rule” as exemplified in different religions will offer the opportunity to look at commonalities rather than differences. The celebration will explore how anyone can reach out with God’s wisdom and love to those behind bars, whether made of steel or of human limitations.

CWU-Newtown will join the CWU-Greater Danbury unit in presenting the service at Danbury Library on Sunday, November 9. The Reverend Dr Bruce Chilton, an ordained Episcopal priest currently rector of the Church of St John the Evangelist in Barrytown, N.Y., will be the afternoon’s speaker.

Prior to that service, a bible study based on the CWU World Community Day theme will be held on Friday, October 31. The study will run from 2 to 4 pm in the library of Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street.

Linda Manganaro will lead the bible study, which will look at some of the ways in which people imprison themselves. There will be time for reflection, sharing, and group prayer on the Golden Rule from different faith perspectives.

All are welcome. For information or to RSVP, contact Mrs Manganaro at 426-3496.

For information about the World Community Day celebration, contact Darlene Jackson, president of the CWU-Newtown unit, at 426-5192.
