Changing The Lives Of People

With Disabilities

To the Editor:

I would like the readers of The Newtown Bee to know what Leaps of Faith Disabled Water Ski Club has done for me and so many other people with disabilities. Due to my disability, Arthrogryposis, I was born with a dislocated right hip, and bilateral clubfeet. I am unable water ski like an able-body persons standing up, I use a sit-ski. This was my second summer water skiing with the club and the clinics are the highlight of my summer. Being able to water ski with Leaps of Faith has improved my quality of life in so many aspects. It increased my self-confidence and made me realize I can do anything I put my mind to! I also have meet wonderful friends that I feel fully understand me due to there own disabilities.

I do not understand why the Lake Zoar Authority (LZA) wants to charge a nonprofit club large amounts of money to patrol during the clinics. Especially when Joel Zeisler offered to have the water ski club patrol it themselves. The clinics are free of charge to all participants, and it also includes lunch and refreshments. Why do other surrounding lakes like Bantam Lake not charge for patrolling for nonprofit agencies, and LZA want to charge Leaps of Faith $241 per clinic? That’s unfair.

I wish the towns’ first selectmen and the LZA would have a heart and see how the Leaps of Faith Disabled Ski Club is changing people with disabilities lives by enabling us to enjoy water skiing!

Sincerely,

Donna Gackenheimer
