Two Audubon Nature Field Trips—

Hike In July, Paddle A Canoe In August

The Lillinonah Audubon Society plans two summer field trips, one in July and one in August, and organizers say it is not too late to sign up for either event.

On Saturday, July 30, at 8 am, hikers will meet Martha Cushman and Carolyn Longstreth at the Bent of the River parking lot on East Flat Hill Road in South Britain. (Take Exit 14 off interstate 84 and follow Route 172 to the signs for the Audubon Center.)

The group will carpool from the Audubon Center to White Memorial Foundation in Litchfield, where there will be a guided nature walk at Little Pond. With an emphasis on aquatic plants and birds, walkers may spot herons, marsh birds, warblers, and other songbirds with young.

Hikers will need sturdy walking shoes and a hat. Bring binoculars, insect repellent, water, and a snack. Heavy rain cancels. Those planning to attend should notify Martha Cushman at 203-798-0477.

On Saturday, August 6, from 10 to 4 pm, there will be a canoe trip at Constitution Marsh at the Audubon Center in Cold Spring, N.Y., which is on the Hudson River. Joanne Sheron is leading this trip and a minimum of ten persons is required by the Marsh Audubon Center.

The interpretive program will be led by an Audubon naturalist and will focus on the birds and natural history of the Marsh, the Hudson Highlands, and the near-shore environment of the tidal Hudson River.

Canoes, paddles, and life jackets will be provided. The cost is $20 for adults; $15 for seniors, students, and Audubon members; $8 per child (must be at least 7 years old and accompanied by an adult). Bring a lunch, drink, hat, sunscreen, appropriate clothing, and binoculars.

For reservations, driving information, and other details, phone Joanne Sheron at 203-263-4069 by July 30.
