‘Sugar Tips’ Diabetes Program Begins February 2

SOUTHBURY — Area residents are invited to register for “Sugar Tips: Recognition and Prevention of Diabetes,” a free four-week series presented by Sandra Micalizzi, APRN, CDE, the Heart Center of Greater Waterbury’s clinical nurse specialist.  The program will meet on Thursdays, February 2, 9, 16, and 23 from 11 am to noon in the library at the Jewish Federation, 444 Main Street North.

Ms Micalizzi’s goal is to help the public recognize symptoms and understand metabolic syndrome and factors associated with the development of diabetes.  The series includes suggestions for lifestyle modifications to prevent diabetes with an emphasis on diet and exercise.

“It is important for people to know that diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease.” said Ms Micalizzi. “By preventing diabetes you can help prevent heart disease.”

Diabetes is a widespread health problem with more than 6.2 million individuals with undiagnosed diabetes in the United States. This program is free and open to the public.

For more information or to register, call Debby Horowitz, Brownstein Jewish family service director, at 203-267-3177, extension 310.
