Babe Ruth 14/15 All Stars
Bounced From State Tournament
NEW MILFORD - It wasn't long ago - just two weeks, actually - that the Newtown
Babe Ruth 14/15 All Stars won the first-ever District 4 championship since
leaving Little League in 1990 and the first championship for a 14-/15-year-old
team since 1985.
But fame was fleeting.
The All Stars opened the tournament Friday night with an 8-1 loss to Milford
and then two days later were eliminated after losing, 9-6, to Stamford.
Last Friday, Newtown's bats were cold and its gloves were even colder.
The All Stars managed just three hits at the plate - two by Peter Dutchick and
one by Tim Place - but it was the seven errors committed in the field which
was Newtown's undoing.
The gloves were a big problem two days later, as well, as Newtowm committed 10
errors in the 9-6 loss to Stamford.
The All Stars fell down into a 9-0 hole and were no-hit through six innings
before rallying for six runs in the seventh, fueled by a three-run triple by
Peter Ivey and singles by Mike Kascak and Joe Wasko.
Wasko pitched 6Â innings, allowing all nine runs, only one of which was earned
- that on a solo home run by Stamford pitcher George Dixon. Matt Bouteiller
pitched the final two outs in relief.
