HARTFORD â The IRS estimates that about two million spouses have been using different names or tax identification numbers on their tax returns than appear on Social Security records. The mismatches may be because of a name change or transposed digits or other errors.
Spouses who have a mismatch on their 1999 federal income tax returns could lose their personal tax exemption and the Earned Income Tax Credit.
âThe IRS always asked that the names and numbers match, but this year will be more vigilant. Taxpayers should act now to prevent problems,â Barbara C. Shuckra, IRS public affairs officer, said.
The IRS will withhold portions of 1999 tax refunds of spouses who fail to notify the Social Security Administration of a name change but who use their new name on their tax return. Often, this occurs after a taxpayer divorces or marries.
Taxpayers should compare the name and identifying number reported on their most recent tax return with the name and identifying numbers shown on their Social Security or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) cards. If a mismatch exists, taxpayers should contact their nearest Social Security office or call 800/772-1213 to obtain a form to request a new card. Taxpayers should call the IRS at 800/829-1040 or 215/516-4846 (not toll-free) for instructions on how to correct an ITIN.
