Steve Hubina Thanks Newtown Rotary

Steve Hubina graduated from the University of Connecticut on May 6 with a bachelor of arts degree in investment banking and visited Newtown Rotary to thank the members for their help with his education. Steve graduated from Newtown High School in 2003 and received a scholarship from Newtown Rotary for a total of $7,000, $1,000 for the first year and $2,000 for each of the next three years.

Newtown Rotary is dedicated to helping young people and this is just one if the many programs the club supports. There are three Interact (for INTERnational ACTion) Service Clubs, one in the Reed School, one in the middle school, and one in the high school, all dedicated to service to humankind.

September through June, six Student of the Month Achievement Awards are presented.

Each school year, four high school students are chosen to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards weekend where subjects not usually taught in school are presented. Such subjects as time management, self-esteem, problem solving, and others are offered in an effort to help young people develop their leadership skills and to better understand themselves, their aims and goals.

One high school student is chosen to attend the World Affairs Seminar, which is a weeklong seminar at the University of Wisconsin when 2,000 students from all over the world get together to learn about each other, the problems of the world, and possible ways to resolve those problems. Rotary feels that “the students of today will be our leaders of tomorrow and if we want a better tomorrow we must act today.”

Rotary meets every Monday evening for a dinner meeting at 6:15 at The Inn at Newtown; any one interested in learning more about Rotary can contact president Larry Gardner at 270-6876.
