NCC Women's Fellowship Dinner April 4
NCC Womenâs Fellowship Dinner April 4
Karen Messina, executive director of Shelter of the Cross, will be guest speaker next Wednesday night, April 4, at the Newtown Congregational Church Womenâs Fellowship pot luck dinner at 6:30 pm downstairs at the church on West Street.
Shelter of the Cross establishes shelters for men and women over 58 years of age and tries to provide elderly residents with a safe, warm, and supportive residence, assistance in obtaining medical, psychiatric, or community support services, and rehabilitation to help transition them to permanent independent housing.
Newtown selectmen have agreed to include $2,500 in the 2001-2002 budget to assist the Danbury-based agency that opened its doors in 1998 and has housed 21 elderly homeless men and women, nine of whom have been transitioned to independent living. Duane Baumert of Newtown is a member of the board of directors of Shelter of the Cross.
Women attending the dinner are asked to bring items to be donated to the shelter, including Crystal Free Drinks â lemonade, iced tea, canned fruit in natural or light syrup, sugar free Jell-O, Sweet and Low or Equal, cleaning supplies, tall kitchen bags, coffee and tea, regular or decaffeinated.
Fellowship members are encouraged to bring a woman younger than themselves to the dinner. President Jan Landgrebe will be outlining the activities and mission of the Womenâs Fellowship and Linda Newton of the NCC Human Services Committee will report on the missions supported by NCC.
Reservations should be made with Mrs Landgrebe at 426-9882, Betty Williams at 270-9931, or Charlotte Kalley at 426-0231.
