SOAP HOLLOW FURNITURE, QUILTS TO LEAD SHULTZ AUCTION AUG. 24–25, 4 CUTS

AVV 8-8 #708695

DUNCANSVILLE, PENN. — Since 1974, C. Wayne Shultz has held a biennial action at the Duncansville Community Center and this year’s no reserve, no consignment, no buyer’s premium auction will take place August 24–25, at 9 am each day.

The auctioneer has no shop and does not participate in shows so he is offering antiques that were collected specifically for this Americana Auction. Many items are fresh to the market or from private homes or from 40+-year collections. Nearly all the furniture and primitives have fine original paint or surface. A smaller percentage have good old repaint or surface.

Friday’s session will include Mount Washington and Victorian glass such as Burmese, cut velvet, brides’ baskets, cranberry, Rubena, satin and spangle. Also offered will be a few pieces of signed Tiffany, Loetz, Webb and unsigned art glass, as well as R.S. Prussia, Nippon, Wave Crest, Nakara, Royal Bayreuth, Belleek, Amberina, carnival and cut glass.

Other highlights include sterling silver tea and coffee services, three sets of sterling flatware, slag glass panel shade lamps, hanging parlor, miniature student lamp, many cast iron and tin windup toys, mohair teddy bears, bisque dolls and accessories, art pottery, gold jewelry and several coins, some oak and Victorian furniture and miscellaneous items. Most china, art pottery and glassware is in fine condition.

Saturday’s session consists of an extensive collection of mostly original painted decorated country furniture including a Soap Hollow high chest with original fire engine red paint, a Soap Hollow blanket chest with original paint and a rare Soap Hollow nightstand. Country furniture and some period pieces will also be offered.

Other offerings include a large collection of early country primitives, soft paste china, Flow Blue and chalkware. Pennsylvania redware includes five pieces of signed John Bell, Waynesboro, Penn., (one rare signed John Bell tobacco jar with lid). Also crossing the block will be spatterware sponge, mocha, 24 pieces of decorated stoneware, folk art wood carvings and chests.

Prints and paintings include a rare watercolor side profile of a New England lady attributed to Davis in Massachusetts, Oriental carpets and fine woven coverlets, a collection of approximate 27 American quilts with fine to immaculate quilting. About 20 quilts date from pre-1850–1900, 14 are unlaundered crisp, and only a few have minor wear or stains.

A rare and important quilt made for Elias Poffenberger, signed, presented to him by his aunt Mary Loman, March 21, 1851), is unlaundered crisp with immaculate quilting. Full provenance of the quilt will be given auction day; several other fine Poffenberger quilts will be offered including a rare unlaundered reverse appliqué Pennsylvania and Maryland album quilt with vibrant colors and quilting.

Preview will be Thursday, August 23, 1 to 6 pm. For information, call C. Wayne Shultz at 814-832-2582.
