The Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to raise money for cancer research, education, and advocacy. The Relay will run from June 10 at 7 pm through June 11 at 7 am at Newtown High Schoolâs Blue and Gold Stadium.
The Graceful Planet Moving Arts Center is also teaming up with Youth United for Global Action & Awareness (YUGA), a club at Newtown High School, for a fundraiser to benefit children orphaned by AIDS.
Members of The Graceful Planetâs Karma Dance Project will present Peter and the Wolf, a musical story by Sergei Prokofiev, followed by a dance workshop Friday, May 12, at 6:30 pm, at Newtown High School.
YUGA is a nationwide organization that includes a diverse group of young people, ages 12 to 24, from middle schools, high schools, and universities throughout the United States. Members are dedicated to global citizenship and taking action to raise awareness about global issues including poverty, injustice, HIV/AIDS, child exploitation, and child rights.
The fundraiser is a part of the effort to promote awareness and increase support each year on May 7, World AIDS Orphans Day (WAOD), for the 15 million children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. For the past four years youth and adults from around the world have been coming together to raise awareness for this cause.
The WAOD was organized by Francois-Xavier Bagnoud to create a global network to protect children orphaned by AIDS. The day highlights the necessity of providing comprehensive care for these children.
The cost is $8 for adults and $5 at the door and all proceeds support the YUGA fundraiser for children orphaned by AIDS. For more information call 426-8215 or visit www.gracefulplanet.com or www.planusa.org/youth.
