Applications and information on the following scholarships has arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. For a complete list of scholarships available, check out the scholarship file in the Career Center. Call Mrs McEvoy at 426-1915 if you have any questions.

USS Connecticut Scholarship Program –– The scholarship program was named for the State of Connecticut’s flagship vessel, the submarine USS Connecticut (SSN 22). The ship presents several scholarships every year to eligible members of the present and past crew or their dependents, and to eligible citizens of the state who plan to study at a Connecticut college or university. Last year 13 merit scholarships were awarded: three to dependants of the members of the ship’s crew, and 11 to citizens of the state who planned to attend college in Connecticut. All scholarship awards are based on a combination of academic merit and merit demonstrated by involvement in relevant academic, civic, professional, and cultural organizations. The personal essay requested is a 500 words or less personal statement describing why you are applying for the USS Connecticut Scholarship and how it will support your academic aspirations. Completed applications are due by April 30. More information is available in the Career Center or by contacting John Stratton at 860-434-2534 or jpstratton@snet.net.

Newtown High School Student Government 2003 Scholarship –– A $500 award will be given to two students who have demonstrated leadership and scholarship in their four-year high school career. The student must have an average of 85 or above, possess leadership qualities, and have been accepted to a post high school program (college, university, technical/vocational school, etc). Essay is required and is to be no more than two pages double-spaced. Tell us about your own leadership qualities and specific instances where you have used them to improve your school, your town, or yourself. Applications are due to Mrs Schwartz in the Guidance Office by Friday, April 25.

Squire Tux –– Ten $3,500 college scholarships are being offered by Squire Tux. Applications are available at all Squire Tux locations (there is one at the Brass Mill in Waterbury) and all students are eligible. Applications must be received by May 1. Call 800-668-5252 for more information or mrtux.com.

Newtown Junior Women’s Club Scholarship/Jane Symes –– In memory of Jane Symes, a $500 award is being offered to a high school senior who is a special education student or a student who is considering a career in the field of special education. This scholarship is based entirely on merit without regard for financial need. The award will be forwarded to the college of his or her choice for the purchase of books. Applications must be postmarked by May 15.

President’s Student Service Challenge and the Newtown High School PTSA Scholarship –– A $1,000 award is being offered through the federal government and the Newtown High School PTSA. This award is based solely on community service. It is for Newtown High School seniors who contributed at least 100 hours of service in any one year of high school, not over the four years of high school, and who will attend a post high school program. The recipient will be chosen by the PTSA president and the NHS Scholarship Committee. The following information needs to be included with the application: one letter of recommendation from the organization or person who can verify the 100 hours of service; submit the hours to the Newtown High School PTSA GIVE Program (through Mrs Korotash in the Guidance Office) and two essay questions. The first essay question is to write a brief statement about the service you gave — What did you do, what did you learn and how do you think your service helped the community, organization or school. The second question is to identify a public figure from history and discuss how that person has inspired you to service and civic leadership. There is no minimum or maximum length requirement for this essay and the federal government has asked that, if the student is chosen, that we forward an exemplary essay on this topic. Applications must be returned to Mrs McEvoy in the Career Center by May 7.A
