SCHOOL BOARD REACHES ACCORD WITH CUSTODIANS
The Board of Education and the school system's custodial union have agreed
upon a three-year contract, which includes three percent raises
and major changes to health insurance.
The custodial union, which has 39 members, is the first school union to agree
to a managed health-care system. The board is ultimately hoping the other
unions will follow suit.
Union president John Johnson said he has asked around about managed
health-care and has received reassuring responses.
"It is something that is happening all over the country," he said. "It means a
lot less paperwork for us."
The total net cost of the contract is about 2.8 percent higher than the total
net cost of the current contract.
School officials could not provide details on the savings involved in getting
the unions to agree to managed health-care because the board is currently
negotiating a few contracts.
