St John’s Episcopal Church will have its Donut Stop, with just-cooked donuts served during the first hours of The Great Pootatuck Duck Race, on Saturday, May 25. The church is at 5 Washington Avenue in Sandy Hook, and the sale will run from 9 am until noon, or while supplies last.

The three-hour event will be the first since 2009. St John’s Senior Warden Bruce Moulthrop says the event originally began on a rainy Saturday morning in June 2001, and credits parishioner Mary Fellows with the idea. The event was first called Donut Drive-Thru. Patrons were able to drive up to the church, roll down their windows, place and pay for an order, and then receive their order in just a few minutes.

“After several of these, though, we found that the line of cars would literally extend down to the center of Sandy Hook,” said Mr Moulthrop.

For several years the church instead offered a park-and-walk service, with donuts sold from a cart and tables in the church’s front lawn. The last time the church did that was autumn 2009.

“Ever since then, patrons have been asking when there was going to be another one,” said Mr Moulthrop.

So next weekend, parishioners — no doubt with grillmaster/senior warden Mr Moulthrop leading the way — will be cooking and selling donuts ($1 each, $6 for a half dozen, and $10 for a dozen), doughboys (same prices), and coffee and juice.
