There’s Art In Your Autograph

Creative Wellspring, a series facilitated by Ginger Humeston, will feature artist Judy Corrigan on February 1 at 9:30 am in the C.H. Booth Library meeting room.

The series evolved from a program Ms Humeston originally presented for the Bridgeport Diocese. She feels that women of all ages need to come together to learn from each other because they all share the common thread of needing to learn how to keep centered.

Participants are asked to bring along a journal to keep a record of their experience.

Ms Corrigan will guide participants in an exercise titled “Your Name is a Line Drawing,” in which each individual will find creative expression through simply having fun drawing, exploring, changing, and expanding her name. This is a unique and innovative way to discover self-expression because it will be a surprise to discover that your name can tell you so much.

There is no talent needed to share in this experience because Ms Corrigan feels that if you can write your name then you can draw.

Ms Corrigan has been an artist for many years, and has been featured in many art exhibitions throughout the area, such as Silvermine, the Rockefeller Gallery in New York City, and recently at Gallery Eleven in Fairfield. She has studied in Europe and is a founding member of the Canal Street Artists Collective in Shelton.

She won an artist’s residency at the NALL Arts Foundation in Provence, which led recently to two exhibitions in France.

“Human and animal figures, which I build intuitively out of the paint, are dominant images in my paintings,” Ms Corrigan said. “The mythical connection between animals and humankind fascinates me.”

Ms Corrigan’s paintings, strong, original images in layers of Mediterranean blues, greens, and ochres, are described by the artist-critic Victor Caglioti as “a record of our felt experiences… vibrant, energetic, and direct.”

Ms Corrigan majored in art in college, with post-graduate studies at the Art Students League in New York City. She is an adjunct professor of art and art history at Housatonic Community Technical College. Her work is in private collections in France, Sweden, Germany, and the United States.
