Into The Ditch

Shane D. French, 35, of Middletown, N.Y., was driving a 2002 Chevrolet utility truck southbound on Valley Field Road South at 7:54 am on October 15 when he moved over on the narrow road to let a northbound vehicle pass. The utility truck slid off the sounder into a utility pole and ditch, and had to be towed from the scene. No enforcement action was taken.

School Vandalism

Sometime in between Saturday morning, October 11, and Monday morning, October 13, someone broke a six-foot window in the rear of Head O’ Meadow School. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newtown Police Department at 426-5841 regarding case 9703-7443.

Attempted Burglary

Someone entered a house under construction at 3 Kay Lane sometime between 1 pm on October 14 and 11 am on October 15 and attempted to remove a boiler from a utility room in the basement. The person entered through the utility room basement, disconnected the water lines, electrical connection, and flue from the boiler but left without removing it. Anyone with information should contact the Newtown police.

Multiple Charges

Pamela Gage, 48, of Totem Trail, Sandy Hook, turned herself in to police on October 15 after learning that a warrant had been issued for her arrest on a charge of failure to appear in court on September 19. She had been arrested on September 2 after being involved in a one-car accident in which her car hit a telephone pole. In that incident she was charged with driving under the influence, making an improper turn, and possession of narcotics. Gage posted a $500 cash bond and was released pending a court appearance on October 30.

No Passing Zone

Malti J. Rana, 43, of Danbury was charged with improper passing in a no-passing zone on October 14 at 2:12 pm after his 2000 Honda Accord struck a vehicle being driven by Thomas F. Maurath, 58, of Old Stream Road, Newtown, on Mile Hill Road at the entrance to the Exit 11 commuter parking lot. Police said the driver of a third vehicle stopped on Mile Hill to allow Maurath to turn left out of the parking lot. Rana passed that vehicle on the left and struck Maurath’s car. Rana complained of neck pain and was transported to Danbury Hospital by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance.

Three-Car Crash

Three vehicles were involved in an accident on Mt Pleasant Road at Diamond Drive at 7:48 am on October 15. Police said a car stopped on Mt Pleasant to allow a vehicle to pull out of Diamond Drive and make a right turn into the westbound lane. A 2002 BMW driven by Susan Portnoy, 48, of Winding Road, Newtown, also stopped, as did a vehicle driven by Conrad Neufeld, 60, of Joan Drive. A 1996 Volvo driven by Richard J. Seman, 41, of Middlebury could not stop and hit the rear of Neufeld’s car, pushing it into the Portnoy vehicle, according to police. Seman was given a written warning for following too close.

Phone Found

Police said a white Uden dual handset phone was found on Hattertown Road on October 15. It may be claimed at the police department.
