Wedgwood Brings Strong Prices At Remmey On July 12

w/cuts coming

SUMMIT, N.J. -- On July 12 Remmey Galleries held a special auction of the

Wedgwood collection of Paul MacNeil of Granby, Conn. Approximately 100 pieces

of Eighteenth, Nineteenth and Twentieth Century tri-colors, black basalts and

jasperwares in blue, green, lavender and yellow grounds were acquired from

some of the most prestigious collections in the world, including that of Gary

Cheval and the Lenhart collection, which was auctioned by Christie's in 1987.

Early caneware, rare shapes, unusual colors and uncommon scenes were the

hallmark of the Sunday afternoon auction.

National and international collectors competed on the auction floor and on

seven active phone lines. Keen interest on an unusual Nineteenth Century

3‹-inch high black jasper dip spill vase, which was engine-turned with

vertical bands of black and white and rimmed with trailing foliage, resulted

in a final price of $1,495 against a presale estimate of $375/500. Prices

reflect a 15 percent buyer's premium.

A Nineteenth Century tri-colored blue, white and lilac lidded urn with ram

horn handles commanded $1,955 under active bidding. A pair of seven-inch high

yellow jasper dip pear-shaped vases, also Nineteenth Century, realized $2,185

against a presale estimate of $1/1,400. This pair of vases was purchased from

Christie's in 1987 as part of the Lenhart collection.

Enthusiastic bidders battled it out over a late Nineteenth Century tri-colored

white, green and lavender jasper three-piece footed chocolate service acquired

from the Gary Cheval collection, which resulted in a final price of $2,875

(est $1,6/1,800). A pair of 1810-20 black jasper dip vases hammered down at

$2,300, and a Nineteenth Century black jasper dip cache pot brought $1,150.

Active bidding on an 11-inch black jasper Portland vase, circa 1825, resulted

in a hammer price of $3,105.

The sales topper was the last lot of the day. Lot 91 consisted of a Nineteenth

Century 22-inch high slate blue jasper lidded urn ornamented with Flaxman's

figure of Hercules in the garden of the Hesperides. This piece, also from the

Gary Cheval collection, commanded $4,485 from a determined phone bidder.
