PURCHASE, N.Y. â This yearâs annual Purchase College Jewish Studies Fall Film Festival will include some of the most acclaimed recent releases from Israel in three nights of screenings featuring five films October 13, 20, and 27.
The films will be screened in the Humanities Theatre in the Durst Family Humanities Building at 7 pm. The campus is at 735 Anderson Hill Road. All films will be introduced by Purchase College faculty members or by guest speakers, and will be followed by a discussion. The festival is free and open to the public.
October 13: Lisa and Slava Chaplinâs A Trumpet in the Wadi, 2001, will be screened on October 13. Huda, an Arab-Christian woman who speaks fluent Hebrew, and Alex, a quirky Jewish immigrant from Russia, find their true love challenged by the contradictions of Israeli society. Based on a novel by Sami Michael, Trumpet in the Wadi was voted Best Film by the 2001 Haifa Film Festival.
October 20: Ramleh, 2001 is an original documentary that follows the lives of three women, one a recent Jewish immigrant, one an Arab, and one an Orthodox Jew, all of whom reside in the town of Ramleh. Directly following is My Terrorist, 1978. Filmmaker Yulie Cohen-Gerstel was wounded in a terrorist attack by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. More than 20 years later, she started considering releasing the man who almost killed her.
October 27: Out for Love, Be Back Shortly and Company Jasmine each capture some of the feelings young men and women experience as soldiers in the Israeli army. Hillels of Westchester is cosponsoring the third night of the series.
Purchase College is home to an expanding Jewish Studies Program that offers public programming to the community as well as a large variety of undergraduate courses in Jewish Studies. Purchase also has an active Hillel organization.
