A Concert Of Remembrance, With Performances

Planned In Newtown And Waterbury

The Music Ministry of St Rose of Lima Church will present two performances of “A Concert of Remembrance,” its sixth annual choral festival offering.

Created to honor the musical legacy of W.A. Mozart as well as to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the events of 9/11, performances are planned for Sunday, September 10, at 4 pm, at St Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road in Newtown, and Monday, September 11, at 7 pm, at St Anne’s Shrine, 515 South Main Street in Waterbury.

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

The first portion of the concert will celebrate the legacy of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in honor of the 22th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The program will open with excerpts from Movements I Allegro and III Allegro of Piano Concerto No 33 KV 482, featuring piano soloist Joseph J. Jacovino, the director of music at St Rose Church.

It will continue with Veni Sancte Spiritus K.047, for Soloists, Mixed Chorus and Orchestra, composed around 1769 when Mozart was 12 or 13 years old; Alma Dei Creatoris K 277, for Soloists, Mixed Chorus and Orchestra, composed at age 21; and Ave Verum Corpus, K.618, For Mixed Chorus and Strings, from June 1791.

Following intermission, the concert will resume with Legacy of Faith, a cantata by Joseph and Pamela Martin that was composed in 2002 for a 9/11 remembrance concert. A powerful musical presentation that celebrates the foundations of the church and God’s redemptive work, the cantata features orchestrations by Brant Adams. It pays homage to the past, but delivers a strong message of hope for the future. The performances this month will feature duets by Sharon Goodkowsky and Bob Boncoddo.

St Rose Church can be reached by calling 426-1014; St Anne’s Shrine can be reached at 203-756-4439.
