Newtown Middle School and Middle Gate Elementary School both held evening events recently to highlight student creativity.

The NMS Student Showcase was held the evening of Tuesday, April 23, and according to accounts, it was a busy evening. NMS art teachers Leigh Anne Coles and Kristen Ladue report that roughly 200 people attended the event.

Artwork lined the walls at NMS, and visitors were welcome to tour the building and look at all of the work on exhibit. Furniture painted by students was on display in the school’s lobby. More than 18 different art projects were represented at the Student Showcase, according to Ms Coles and Ms Ladue. Incoming seventh grade students who have been accepted into the NMS Art Enrichment program also had artwork on display for the evening, and copies of this year’s NMS student literary magazine, Opus Optima, were on sale. The NMS Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Band performed in the school’s auditorium during the event.

Middle Gate Art

Just two days later, on April 25, Middle Gate opened its doors to students and families for its art show. Student artwork was displayed throughout the school’s halls for the event. As they arrived, parents were led about by their children. Students eagerly pointed out their artwork, like first graders Reese Armitage and Autumn Stoerzinger, smiling when they spotted their own artwork.

The colorful creations on display on the walls were matched by clay creations in the school’s art room. Hanging above clay dragon figures sculpted by Middle Gate third graders were “Nights in Shining Armor” by third graders using scratch paper. Students smiled when they saw art teacher Jean Walter, who escorted families and students to view the artwork.

Head O’ Meadow Elementary School’s art show is scheduled for May 15, at the school, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm, and Sandy Hook Elementary School’s art show will be the same evening, May 15, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. Hawley Elementary School’s art show is scheduled for May 28, at the school, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. The art shows are free, and members of the public are welcome to attend.
