CWU Program, May 6—

See What A Penny Can Do

May Friendship Day is an annual celebration event observed as a common worship experience that strengthens and builds friendly relationships within communities.

Church Women United of Newtown-Bethel will offer a May Friendship Day worship program at Trinity Episcopal Church on Friday, May 6, at 1:30 pm. All are welcome.

There is no admission charge, but an offering will be taken. The offering will support the ongoing work of CWU within the community and state.

Church Women United (CWU) is an ecumenical movement of Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian women. It is a recognized United Nations Non-Governmental Organization.

The theme for May Friendship Day 2005 is “Living in The Light: True Friends are Salt and Light.” The program examines two pronouncements of Jesus to his followers: “You are the light of the world” and “You are the salt of the earth.”

During the service, these metaphors will be expanded in meditations on salt and roots, and on light and wings. Responsive litanies, appropriate music and discussions will complete the program.

It will also be a time to celebrate the Fellowship of The Least Coin (FLC), a worldwide movement that seeks to instill peace and reconciliation within families, work places, communities, nations and the world through prayer and the setting aside of the least coin of a nation. An FLC offering will be taken during the service.

FLC is a worldwide fellowship in over 80 countries. Since 1956, Christian women on all continents have responded to the call by the founder of The Fellowship of the Least Coin, Shanti Solomon of India, to pray for reconciliation in our homes, our communities, our nation and world as we work for peace with justice.

The guest speaker for Newtown’s May Friendship Day will be Virginia Harris, a resident of Southington and a longtime member of CWU. She is a past president of CWU/Southington, a position she held for a number of years.

Mrs Harris was instrumental in bringing The Fellowship of the Least Coin to the state. She has been state chairman of FLC for about five years, and worked in that capacity for a time before that, before the state chairmanship position was officially established. The position is now in the hands of Debbie Caynor. Mrs Harris, however, continues to serve as an advisor at the state-level of FLC.

Members of CWU/Newtown-Bethel will present the Scripture-based program.

A reception with light refreshments will follow the service. All attendees are invited to the reception.
