Gertrude "Gert" Buchanan Lewis, 89, of Newtown, died October 2, at her home on Bears Hill Road. She was the wife of the late George F. Lewis of Stepney, Conn.

Born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on April 18, 1928, she was raised by her grandmothers Sadie Buchanan and Sarah E. Smith. She was the daughter of Marion McOmber Loucks and James Loucks.

Mrs Lewis was the loving mother of five children and her daughters-in-law, David, Sr, and Barbara Lewis of Stepney; Richard and Karen Lewis of Capon Bridge, W.Va.; John and Karen Lewis of Sandy Hook; Ronald "Ron" Lewis of Newtown, who was her devoted caregiver; and Karen Lewis-Booth of Newtown, who was also her caregiver. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, David Lewis, Jr, of Newtown; Carl Lewis and his fiancé Michelle Witkowsky of Stepney; Danny Lewis and wife Amber of Oxford; Yvonne Booth-Laube and husband Clifford Laube of Poughkeepsie, N.Y; Richard "RJ" Lewis, Jr, of Georgia; Sarah Jane Lewis of Sandy Hook; Anna Lewis of Seymour; Laura Schreiner of Sandy Hook; and Danny G. Booth; as well as 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Mrs Lewis' infant daughter predeceased her.

A memorial service will take place Sunday, October 8, at the Stepney Baptist Church, 423 Main Street, Stepney, at 4 pm, with a reception to follow in the Newt and Connie Williams Memorial Room, located in the basement of the church.

Internment at Stepney Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
