Newtown High School’s girls’ soccer team reached the South-West Conference Tournament championship game for the second year in a row with a win over the team that last year defeated the Nighthawks in the pinnacle game.

Host and top-seeded Newtown topped No. 5 Immaculate of Danbury 3-1 in the semifinals at Blue & Gold Stadium on October 30 and will take on No. 6 Pomperaug of Southbury in the championship game at neutral site New Milford High on Thursday, November 1, beginning at 7 pm.

Immaculate took a 1-0 lead before the Nighthawks scored three straight, beginning with Karsen Pirone’s free kick tally, a laser that made it in just under the cross bar. Emma Curtis and Katie Sailer also scored. Curtis and Keeley Kortze recorded assists.

Nighthawks goalkeeper Julianna Stavola made six saves, and the defense did a nice job of shutting down a usually-potent Immaculate offense.

“We did a good job defending them and a good job winning balls in the air. We did a good job being physical without fouling,” Newtown Coach Marc Kenney said. “It feels good to advance. We’re the No. 1 seed, so the expectation is to get to the final.”

The win marked Newtown’s second over Immaculate this fall; the Hawks prevailed 2-1 on October 9.

Pomperaug upset No. 2 Masuk of Monroe 3-0 in the other semifinal contest. The championship matchup provided an opportunity for the Nighthawks and Panthers to settle some unfinished business since the teams had a 1-1 tie back on September 11.
