HARVARD ART MUSEUM POSTS ONLINE ‘I HAVE A SON TO OFFER’ EXHIBITION

AVV 6-20 #743422

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. — “I Have a Son to Offer,” an online exhibition comprising American Civil War artworks in Harvard Art Museum’s collections, has been posted at www.artmuseums.harvard.edu/civilwar.

The virtual exhibition features a thematic selection of Harvard’s artworks to explore how three American national traumas — Native American genocide, the enslavement of Africans and the Civil War — are inextricably bound together.

Reproductions of 71 artworks from the Fogg and nine other Harvard collections are organized in nine sections that include “The Peculiar Institution” and “Nursing the Casualties.” The exhibition exemplifies the use of Harvard’s visual collections for historical research and teaching; it is also dedicated to Harvard’s new president, Drew Gilpin Faust, and honors her scholarship in the field, including her new book, This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War.
