Police reports covering Newtown, Conn., for the period of December 11-18, 2018

n a Newtown tradition that dates back to 1959, this year about 150 volunteers participated in The Newtown Fund’s annual Depot Day holiday giving program, through which the fortunate help the needy, anonymously providing holiday gifts for children and adults.

The National Weather Service has issued at Flash Flood Warning for sections of southern Fairfield County and New Haven County, which will remain covered by the warning until 2:45 Friday, December 21. While not part of those areas, Newtown is listed within the warning, which was issued out of the Albany NWS service at 10:55 am. 

The developer of a major industrial/commercial project proposed for a sprawling site in Hawleyville, near Exit 9 of Interstate 84, has reworked its construction proposal, an earlier version of which received a wetlands protection permit in July. The new version of the project significantly increases the overall amount of construction proposed and alters the mix of uses.

Inland Wetlands Commission (IWC) members are continuing their review of numerous wetlands violations that have been uncovered at the Planters’ Choice properties on Huntingtown Road and Meadowbrook Road. They are formulating a list of remedies for the firm to implement to correct the environmental problems.

The Board of Education heard a report on special education practices and procedures from consultants at its meeting on December 18: The report recommends further district-level reviews.

The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved a four-year contract with bargaining unit employees of Newtown’s Department of Public Works (DPW) during a brief regular meeting December 17.

Twenty-six luminaria bags were placed on the Fairfield Hills campus sign on Friday, December 14, and lit around dusk. Each bag represented one of the educators or one of the children killed six years earlier on 12/14.
