Newtown And Sandy Hook Runners Compete In Half Marathon

FAIRFIELD — Newtown and Sandy Hook were well represented on June 28 in the annual Faxon Law Group Fairfield Half Marathon. The 13.1-mile course started and finished at Jennings Beach and brought runners through the streets of downtown Fairfield and Southport, along the water in spots, and up some tough hills.

Sandy Hook’s Pedro Padilla finished the course in 165th place among nearly 3,000 competitors, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:34.35.

The race, which features top international runners and fast competitors from across the United States, was won by Ethiopia’s Gosa Girma Tefera, who completed the course in 1:04.05. The top female was Etaferahu Temesgen, also of Ethiopia, who completed the run in 1:14.09 and placed 11th overall.

Sandy Hook runner Carmine Camera placed 187th in 1:35.55. Newtown and Sandy Hook had several other runners among the top 1,000. Robert Katrinak was 250th in a time of 1:38.39. Luke Albrecht came in 279th in 1:39.39. Cory Benson, Newtown’s top female runner in the race, came in 353rd and won the 55–59 year old women’s category by coming across the finish line with a time of 1:42.29. Mike O’Connor was 357th with a time of 1:42.33. Tim Northrop finished 543rd in 1:46.13. Benjamin Nash was 701st in 1:48.52.

Other Newtown competitors who finished in under two hours and among the top 1,000 were: 705. Travis Barnes; 751. Brian Cascone; 765. Jason Feli; 897. Joe Moran; 917. Frank Caico; 918. Lina Marcela Montoya; 929. Patrick Kenney; and 1,000, Gary Thill.
