The Newtown Scholarship Association (NSA) board of governors invites the public to “take flight” and join them Saturday, September 29, at their Wine, Whiskey, and the World annual fundraising blast.

“Our donors and volunteers look forward to this event every year,” said Linda Trentacosta, co-chair of NSA’s events committee. “It’s a fun fall get-together, and businesses in Newtown and surrounding towns lend lots of support by way of sponsorships and donations to make every year a success.”

Sponsors this year include Savings Bank of Danbury, Nanavaty, Nanavaty & Davenport, The Newtown Bee, Ingersoll Auto of Danbury, Caldwell & Walsh Building Construction, Total Team Solutions, Charter Oak Financial, Village Eye Care, and Ellen Aho & Tim Shearin.

According to committee member Dawn Bogdan, the evening will feature beer, wine, and spirits tastings from Cork n Barrel of Newtown and a variety of foods from across the globe. A sundae bar will feature ice cream donated by Ferris Acres Creamery. Live music will be courtesy of Connecticut musician Mike Collins.

Live auction items will include trips to Rome, New Orleans, and Cabo San Lucas; an African safari; a getaway weekend in New York City, including two tickets from broadway.com; and a tour of the Sam Adams Brewery in Boston. The silent auction will offer a variety of interesting selections for bid, including a cool-sculpting gift certificate from Medi Spa of Newtown, Delta Box Yankee tickets, UConn basketball tickets, broadway.com gift certificate, a Fender electric guitar signed by Disney pop star Olivia Holt, and a sundry of other gift cards and baskets from local restaurants and businesses.

The fall dinner is one of three major annual fundraising efforts that supports Newtown Scholarship Association’s work.

“As a lifelong Newtown resident and Newtown High School graduate, it’s such a privilege to be able to invest in our students’ future,” said NSA’s president Patrick Kelley. “This year, we had record applications — and events like this serve to fund our mission: to help put a college education within reach for every high school graduate from Newtown.”

This year, NSA anticipates supporting more than 180 students with roughly $300,000 in need-based scholarships. Since its inception more than 80 years ago, NSA has provided more than $4 million in total aid to Newtown students. The scholarships are funded through the generous donations of local businesses and individuals and through named memorial and honorary scholarships.

In addition to supporting a worthy cause, the event will pay tribute to one of NSA’s most dedicated and enthusiastic supporters — a woman who believed that all students have the right to a secondary education, regardless of financial circumstances: the late Betty Lou Osborne.

Wine, Whiskey, and the World will take place at Michael’s at the Grove, 42 Vail Road in Bethel, on Saturday, September 29, at 6 pm. Tickets are $125 each and can be purchased through the NSA’s website, newtownscholarship.ejoinme.org/2018winewhiskeyworld.
