NHS Animal Concerns Club Looks Back At

A Year Of Giving

By Eliza Hallabeck

The Newtown High School Animal Concerns Club held a year-end party on Monday, June 11, and looked back on its eventful year of outreach and support.

While club members discussed its many efforts to raise money and help support animal organizations and related programs in the area, it still had one check to give to Assistant Director of Recreation RoseAnn Reggiano to help support the planned Newtown Park & Bark complex.

The group had a booth set up during the May 19 Strutt Your Mutt fundraiser sponsored by the Friends of Newtown Park & Bark and the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department. The NHS Animal Concerns Club sold its “Seeds of Support” birdseed during the fundraiser and raised roughly $130 from the sales.

The Seeds of Support were also sold at the school and around town this past school year, as one of the group’s multiple efforts to raise money.

Also during the last school year, the NHS Animal Concerns Club gave $100 to Farm Sanctuary, $50 to Zoar Ridge Stables & Rescue, $50 to the Humane Organization Representing Suffering Equines (HORSE) of Connecticut, $50 to the Humane Society of the United States, $100 to Wildlife in Crisis, and more.

“We had a really, really, successful year,” said NHS Animal Concerns Club Parent Advisor Lorrie Silber.

The Animal Concerns Club also has a new website, located at https://sites.google.com/a/newtown.k12.ct.us/nhs-animal-concerns -club/home/about-us.
