Newtown High School Art Club members recently oversaw the design and construction of a mosaic created in response to the events of 12/14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School. By Tuesday, May 27, members of the club proudly held up the completed work during a club meeting.

“It helped to do something to remember it,” said club member Halle Wilson.

The idea for the project was born shortly after returning to school from winter break, according to club members. At first the students wanted to create a mural, but decided a mosaic could be hung anywhere once complete.

For the project, Art Club members researched a favorite thing of each of the victims from the events of 12/14. The  students then designed an image of a green and white Sandy Hook School ribbon surrounded by depictions of each of the favorite things. Some of the images show representations of learning and others show things like a horse, a teddy bear, an art easel, and a tennis ball and racket.

Students in NHS art teacher Carol Pelligra’s Ceramics 2 class also helped create the mosaic. Ms Pelligra is the NHS Art Club advisor.

Bailey Pottery and Dick Blick donated materials for the project.

Art Club students who helped with the project were Maryyan Ali, Hannah Bartlett, Emily Brinkman, Leah Bromberg, Tiffany Chen, Jacob Covill, Aileen Deker, Quinn Murphy, Dena Riccio, Isabel Soriano, Zach Weiland, Halle Wilson, and Erika Bloomberg.

Ceramics 2 students who contributed to the project were Christian Beaurline, Jamie Calandro, Emma Cizmazia, Aileen Decker, Hannah Dillon, Veronica Eames, Nicole Ferraz, Rachael Fuchs, Celia Gold, Michaela Hall, Tara Hegarty, Gabriela Kalinowski, Casey Rose Klein, Emily Newman, Megan Olszewski, Nicole Remillard, Nicole Russo, Colleen Ryan, Olivia Sergiovanni, Haley Trudell, Amanda Vitti, and Zachary Weiland.

While Ms Pelligra said there has been no decision on where the mosaic will be displayed, she said it could be hung at Sandy Hook School or at any other building in town.
