Two Newtown High School students will have their ceramic pieces displayed during the Annual National K–12 Ceramic Exhibition, which will be held in Wisconsin March 19 to 22.

Hannah Godbout’s “Angler Fish” and Dawson Stout’s “Sea Tea” were both selected from submissions from around the country to be part of this year’s exhibit, which will be put on display at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee.

According to the National K–12 Ceramic Exhibition Foundation, the exhibit is the premier juried ceramic competition for kindergarten through grade 12 students in the United States and the exhibit takes place in a different city each year in conjunction with the annual conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. Hannah’s “Angler Fish” also recently earned a Gold Key award at the 2014 Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards show.

Hannah, a senior at NHS, said she is proud and will not forget both achievements. She also explained she came up with the idea for her “Angler Fish” at the end of the last school year. At the time she was thinking about lamps and what an Angler Fish lamp would look like.

Hannah also said it took her two weeks to figure out how to build the piece and which materials to use for it.

When Dawson, a freshman at NHS, was asked what inspired him to create his “Sea Tea” piece, he responded, “I like the ocean.”

He also said he made the tea pot using a pinch pot method before creating the piece’s orb and other details.

NHS art teacher Carol Pelligra said both of her ceramic students are hardworking, talented, and creative.

“And I’m just proud to be their teacher,” Ms Pelligra said.
