Summer Reading Program At Reed

Summer is almost here and next year’s fifth and sixth graders are invited to take part in the Accelerated Reader Summer Reading Program made available at Reed Intermediate School. The doors of Reed library will be open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9 am until noon, July 11 to August 17.

During that time children can browse, check out and return books, read or take an Accelerated Reading quiz. Accelerated Reader is a program designed to allow children to create an individual reading goal. Students can read at their individual pace and level. After finishing a book, students take a quiz, which provides an objective measure of their reading comprehension. The quizzes are short, consisting of up to 20 factual questions.

Ginny Snowden, librarian at Reed said, “We’ve been piloting the AR program at Reed and find most students do quite well and finish the quiz in less than ten minutes. They may use notes when taking the quiz. It’s wonderful to open up the library in the summer. I will help them along with their parents to set a realistic goal.”

Accelerated Reader keeps track of each student’s scores and provides secure Internet access, so parents are able to view their child’s progress at home. The Accelerated Reading website, which has more information about AR including sample tests, can be accessed from the link page on the Reed library website, www.reedlibrary.com.

Students may take summer reading credit for the same book at Booth and at Reed. There will be a treat for each student who passes a quiz (80 percent is passing). In the fall, each student who has met his or her goal will receive a small trophy. Additionally, Accelerated Reader gives all students who sign up an Accelerated Reader T-shirt.

Mrs Snowden has been visiting all fourth grade classrooms encouraging students to participate in the program. She also informed parents of the program at the Reed Orientation, which took place on May 23.

To participate in the program students must submit a completed application. There is a $20 fee for the program. Mrs Snowden will be supervising the library during the summer hours and can be reached at 270-4887, extension 2400, for more information.
