Tennis Teams Advance To Championships
Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ tennis teams moved on to compete in the South-West Conference championships with semifinal-round victories — the top-seeded girls over No. 4 Weston on May 15 and the second-seeded boys over No. 3 Joel Barlow of Redding on May 16.
The girls’ squad defeated Weston 6-1. The Nighthawks got wins from Lauren Beier, Lauren Frazzetta, and Mia Terracino at second through fourth singles. All of the doubles teams were victorious: Stephanie Roman and Julia Frattaroli, Annie Beier and Aimee Alexander, and Grace Winans and Rachel Durno.
The Newtown girls, last year’s SWC champions, are scheduled to host No. 3 Barlow, which defeated No. 2 Lauralton Hall of Milford in the other semifinal, in the championship on Monday, May 20 at 3:30 pm.
On the boys’ courts, the Hawks defeated Barlow 5-2 to advance to the finals. Newtown got wins from all four singles players: Cam McCleary, Tyler Ruefenacht, Ricky Fuentes, and Yossi Kohrman-Glaser. The third doubles team of Kunal Marwah and Mike Dutsar also came out on top.
The boys will visit top-seeded Weston, a winner over Pomperaug of Southbury, in the finale on May 20.
