Thank You, Newtown!

To the Editor:

When I was growing up in Ridgefield, the only thing I knew about Newtown was that my track coach lived there.

Later, as a young mom looking for a place to raise a family, I discovered how amazingly vibrant and beautiful Newtown was, and we decided to set down roots there. That was back in 2004, but our bid for a Newtown house was rejected, and we ended up settling in Fairfield.

Newtown’s stores and restaurants (and ice cream!) continued to attract me on a regular basis, but it was never quite enough for me to fully appreciate what a truly special place Newtown is.

Recently, I ran for the State Senate in the 28th District, and that campaign changed everything for me. The hours that I spent knocking on your doors, talking to you, and attending the marvelous events hosted by the town and its residents allowed me to get a much deeper look into a community that is unique in both its diversity and its unity.

I know that having your dinner interrupted by candidates and canvassers (from June through Election Day!) can be irritating, but you would never know it in Newtown. I cannot thank you enough for all the time you spent sharing your opinions and your stories with me. By listening and sharing with so many of you, I surely became a better candidate, but more importantly, I became a better neighbor. I have come to truly appreciate the treasure that is Newtown.

So, thank you Newtown, for the wonderful and enlightening experience you gave me while being your candidate.
