Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Newtown Senior Center will be closed Monday, January 17, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr Day.

*Classes for chair yoga, a softer and more soothing experience, will be held on Tuesdays from 3 to 4 pm and Fridays from 11:45 to 12:45.

 

Overnight Trips

*Celebrate Valentine’s Day at Mohegan Sun on February 10 and 11. There is a bonus package at check-in, $20 free bet or two buffets, breakfast on the second day, and depart for Mystic Cornerstone Production to see a matinee of Moonlight in Mystic. Cost is $204 single, $144 double, or $139 triple.

*Between February 25 and 27, enjoy an illuminated monument tour of National Air & Space Museum, visit the National Archives, The Newseum, and watch the UConn Women play Georgetown. Cost includes two nights at the Hampton Inn, two breakfasts, two dinners, and your tours. Cost is $391 double, $481 single, and $371 triple. 

 

Recurring Activities

*Yoga classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 10 am with Mary Matern.

Monday: AM hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, art class.

Tuesday: AM line dancing, cards for troops; PM Tai Chi, pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc, Wii bowling.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc; PM Scrabble.

Friday: AM Mah Jongg, quilting, exercise, chair yoga; PM knitting/crocheting.

 

Menu For Week Of

January 10–14

Monday: Pasta Bolognese with parmesan cheese, chopped broccoli, spinach, Italian bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday: Fresh ham with gravy, applesauce garnish, mashed sweet potato, summer spring blend, wheat dinner roll, pineapple tidbits.

Wednesday: Hot open turkey sandwich on wheat with gravy, steak fries with ketchup, diced acorn squash, apple juice, seasonal pie.

Thursday: New England clam chowder with crackers, tuna salad on bed of lettuce with tomato and confetti barley salad, club roll, fruit cocktail.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, January 17: Closed in observance for Martin Luther King. Jr’s birthday

Tuesday, January 18: Stuffed salmon with rosemary cream sauce, fresh smashed potato, green beans, herbed breadstick, vanilla pudding with strawberries.
