CHRIS MARTIN OPENS JAN. 26 AT MITCHELL-INNES & NASH

avv/gs set 1/9 #725148

NEW YORK CITY — Mitchell-Innes & Nash will present an exhibition of new paintings by Chris Martin in its Chelsea gallery January 26–March 1. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition at Mitchell-Innes & Nash. An opening reception will be Saturday, January 26, from 6 to 8 pm.

Martin’s paintings are investigations in color, form and texture, ranging from bold and graphic to gestural and expressionistic. Their surfaces are often distressed or collaged with elements including shellacked bread, broken vinyl records and papier mache forms.

Martin is deeply engaged with the history of abstraction, and many of his paintings incorporate homages to artistic influences such as Paul Feeley, Yayoi Kusama and Alfred Jensen.

Martin has described his art as “turning up the volume” of paintings, and many of his works refer to musicians, including Miles Davis, John Coltrane and the “Godfather of Soul” James Brown.

Martin was born in 1954 and lives and works in Brooklyn, N.Y. Recent shows include a solo exhibition at Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Los Angeles, and “The Painted World” at PS 1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, New York. Martin has been in group shows at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum and the Denver Art Museum. He is represented by Mitchell-Innes & Nash. A fully illustrated catalog will accompany the exhibition.

Mitchell-Innes & Nash Chelsea is at 534 West 26th Street, between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues. For information, www.miandn.com or 212-744-7400.
