Sophie Ackert, a member of the Junior Newtown Action Alliance (Jr NAA), said this week that the group is hoping for more people to take part in its “Green Post-It Project.”

The project, she said, was begun by Jr NAA members to help people “realize that even small acts of kindness can mean a lot.”

Sophie explained that people are asked to participate by writing notes on green-colored Post-It notes. Participants are then asked to place the note or notes somewhere in their community for others to find.

The Green Post-It Project began, Sophie explained, when a group of Jr NAA members decided they “wanted to do some kind of act of kindness for the weekend of 12/14.”

Since then, Sophie, who lives in Sandy Hook and attends Westover School in Middlebury, said Jr NAA members are trying to spread the Green Post-It Project.

“We’re trying to keep it going for as long as we can, because anyone can use an act of kindness any day,” said Sophie.

Sophie estimates Jr NAA members have put between 150 to 200 Post-Its around their communities since the project began. Part of the project also asks people who spread kindness through the Post-Its to take a photo of the Post-It and share it on Instagram and/or Twitter, with the hash-tags #greenpostitproject, #gpp, and #honorwithaction. Doing so, Sophie said, will help Jr NAA members know when Post-Its are spread, and it will help spread the kind messages further.

“I think that people should know that any act of kindness can make anyone’s day brighten a lot,” said Sophie.

One example of a note people can write, Sophie shared, is “Have an amazing day!”

“We launched the project when we went to Washington DC for the national gun violence vigil last month, and we would really like to spread it around Newtown and beyond,” said Sophie.
