Newtown High School’s hockey team pulled out a 7-6 win over Horace Greeley of New York in a battle at Danbury Ice Arena on January 17. The NHS wrestling team was also in action, and won the Eagle Classic in Manchester behind Matt Gonzalez’s 100th career win, and a trio of Newtown football players were recently honored. Here’s a brief recap:

On the ice, the Nighthawks were involved in their fourth one-goal nail-biter this winter. Newtown is 3-1 in such games and 3-5 overall. The latest was decided in the final minute as Devin Marsh scored his second goal of the game to break a 6-6 tie with just 46 seconds remaining.

Marsh’s goal put a stop to a run of five consecutive goals scored by Horace Greeley after the Nighthawks had established an apparently comfortable lead. Domenic Cartelli scored twice, and Scott McLean, Sean Ferris, and Matthew Pelisson also lit the lamp for the Hawks. Cartelli had a three assists, and Pelisson, Marsh, Camden Fowler, Ferris, Jack Hanley, and McLean also had assists.

On the mats, the wrestlers remain perfect in five tournaments this season. Gonzalez joins teammates James Leuci and Luca Crudo in the 100 win club.

Also on January 17, Steve George, coach of the NHS football team, announced that Ben Mason, Tim Krapf, and Julian Dunn have been honored by the Walter Camp committee among the best high school players in the state. Newtown won the South-West Conference championship this past fall.

Newtown’s girls’ basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end in a 74-32 setback at nonconference opponent Farmington on January 17. The girls’ cagers will get back to game action with a January 20 visit to Notre Dame-Fairfield, set to begin at 7 pm.

Newtown’s boys’ basketball team will put its six-game winning streak on the line when Notre Dame visits for a 7 pm game on January 20. The action on the court follows the NHS boys’ swimming and diving team’s 4 pm home meet against Bethel.
