Vocational Scholarship Available

WOODBURY — The Weller Foundation, Incorporated (formerly The Vitramon Foundation, Incorporated), has announced that Newtown High School students may now submit applications for this year’s Vincent Voccia Vocational Award. The award, named for a former Trustee of The Vitramon Foundation, Incorporated, has been offered annually to Newtown High School students since 1986. The Voccia Award will provide financial assistance to a Newtown student who has selected a vocational-technical career and will shortly enter vocational training.

The award recipient will be eligible for a grant equal to the lesser of $2,500 or 50 percent of the tuition cost of the vocational program proposed, according to Alexander Fraser, foundation trustee and coordinator of the program.

To be eligible, a student must be attending Newtown High School at the time the award is made, must have demonstrated an interest or talent in his or her chosen field, and must satisfy the admission requirements of the selected institution. Any qualified student who submits an application will be considered for the award.

Mr Fraser said applications for the award must be received by March 30, 2001. The award recipient will be announced on or about April 9. Students interested in applying for the award can obtain full details and an application form from the guidance department at Newtown High School.

The award is named in memory of Vincent A. Voccia, who served as a trustee of the Foundation before he passed away in 1980.
